ABOUT LARRY DUNLAP

    I am a dedicated painter who creates strikingly realistic paintings using old world oil painting techniques in new ways. My passion for art began at a very young age and has only grown stronger with time. My paintings vary in style and subject matter as I explore and learn new techniques.

    I want to evoke a visceral response from the viewer with each painting. I believe that art has the power to communicate complex feelings and ideas in a more direct way than language can.

    I think that the best thing about being a painter is that, if I paint in a way that anyone can understand and appreciate I can have a sort of conversation with anyone that takes a few seconds to really look at one of my pictures.

    I believe that if you have to post a detailed explanation next to your painting in order for the viewer to understand it, you have failed as a visual artist. Maybe you should pursue writing instead. Furthermore, if your art can only be understood by the "enlightened", you are merely hiding your lack of ability behind a wall of bullshit.

    What I am almost always saying to the viewer through my art is, "This is what I saw and this is how I felt about it". Simply that. The de facto question to the viewer is, "What do you see and how do you feel about it?" I have my own ideas and symbolism in these paintings. I want you to find something in there that is you.
